How to Pray the Rosary

The Holy Rosary is a beautiful Catholic devotion that leads us to meditate on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ through the eyes of His Blessed Mother, Mary. Through the prayers of the Rosary, we contemplate the Mysteries of Christ while asking for Mary's intercession and growing closer to her Son. The main component of a traditional Rosary consists of five Hail Mary decades, with each decade being accompanied by meditation on a particular mystery from the life of Christ.

1. Begin with the Sign of the Cross +

2. Say The Apostles' Creed

3. Pray One Our Father

4. Pray Three Hail Marys

5. Pray the Glory Be

6. Announce the First Mystery and Pray One Our Father

7. Pray Ten Hail Marys (allow each prayer to draw your attention back to the mystery being contemplated and the life of Christ)

8. Pray the Glory Be and Fatima Prayer

9. Announce the next Mystery and Pray One Our Father, Ten Hail Marys, and the Glory Be and Fatima Prayer

10. Repeat Step 9 until all Mysteries are complete

11. Pray the Hail, Holy Queen (below if needed)

12. (Optional) Pray the Traditional Closing Prayer

13. End with the Sign of the Cross +

The Mysteries and Prayers of the Rosary

Mysteries of the Rosary

The Joyful Mysteries - reflect the events surrounding the Incarnation and early life of Jesus Christ.

1. The Annunciation
   The Angel Gabriel announces to Mary that she will become the Mother of God, and Mary responds with her faithful “yes” to God’s plan.

2. The Visitation
   Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth, who rejoices at the presence of Christ in Mary’s womb.

3. The Nativity
   Jesus Christ is born in Bethlehem, bringing God’s love and salvation into the world.

4. The Presentation in the Temple
   Mary and Joseph present the infant Jesus in the Temple in obedience to God’s law.

5. The Finding of Jesus in the Temple
   After three days of searching, Mary and Joseph find the young Jesus teaching among the elders in His Father’s house.

The Sorrowful Mysteries - invite us to meditate upon Christ’s suffering and His sacrificial love for our salvation.

1. The Agony in the Garden
   Jesus prays in the Garden of Gethsemane, accepting the Father’s will before His Passion.

2. The Scourging at the Pillar
   Jesus is brutally whipped and suffers great pain for the sins of humanity.

3. The Crowning with Thorns
   Jesus is mocked as king and crowned with thorns, enduring humiliation and suffering.

4. The Carrying of the Cross
   Jesus carries His Cross to Calvary, embracing the burden of our salvation.

5. The Crucifixion and Death of Jesus
   Jesus offers His life on the Cross for the forgiveness of sins and the redemption of the world.

The Glorious Mysteries - celebrate Christ’s victory over sin and death and the promise of eternal life.

1. The Resurrection
   Jesus rises from the dead, conquering sin and death and opening the gates of Heaven.

2. The Ascension
   Jesus ascends into Heaven, where He reigns at the right hand of the Father.

3. The Descent of the Holy Spirit
   The Holy Spirit comes upon Mary and the Apostles at Pentecost, empowering the Church to proclaim the Gospel.

4. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
   Mary is assumed body and soul into Heavenly glory.

5. The Coronation of Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth
   Mary is crowned by her Son as Queen of Heaven, interceding for all her children.

The Luminous Mysteries - focus on the public ministry of Jesus and the revelation of His divine identity.

1. The Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan
   Jesus is baptized by John, and the Father reveals Him as His beloved Son.

2. The Wedding Feast at Cana
   Through Mary’s intercession, Jesus performs His first public miracle by changing water into wine.

3. The Proclamation of the Kingdom of God and the Call to Conversion
   Jesus announces the coming of God’s Kingdom and calls all people to repentance and faith.

4. The Transfiguration
   Jesus reveals His divine glory to Peter, James, and John upon the mountain.

5. The Institution of the Eucharist
   At the Last Supper, Jesus gives His Body and Blood to His disciples and establishes the Holy Eucharist.

The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

The Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen

The Hail Mary (Ave Maria)

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed are thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

The Glory Be (The Doxology)

Glory be to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Fatima Prayer (Optional but Traditionally Included)

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy.

The Hail Holy Queen (The Salve Regina)

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To you we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to you we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us; and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

R.(response) That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. 

Traditional Closing Prayer

Let us pray: O God, whose Only Begotten Son, by his life, Death, and Resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech thee, that while meditating on these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen. 

Traditional Daily Prayer

For centuries, the Holy Rosary was traditionally prayed with three sets of Mysteries: the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries. These fifteen Mysteries, reflecting the life of Christ and His Blessed Mother, were the form of the Rosary commonly prayed by Catholics for generations. The traditional weekly schedule for daily recitation of the Rosary is:

• Monday & Thursday — Joyful Mysteries

• Tuesday & Friday — Sorrowful Mysteries

• Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday — Glorious Mysteries

In 2002, Saint John Paul II, in his Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae, introduced the Luminous Mysteries, also known as the Mysteries of Light. These five additional Mysteries focus on key moments from the public ministry of Jesus Christ.

To incorporate the Luminous Mysteries into the weekly Rosary devotion, the commonly used prayer schedule was adjusted as follows:

• Monday & Saturday — Joyful Mysteries

• Tuesday & Friday — Sorrowful Mysteries

• Wednesday & Sunday — Glorious Mysteries

• Thursday — Luminous Mysteries

Today, many Catholics follow this four-set weekly schedule, while others continue to pray the traditional fifteen Mysteries. Both practices remain a beautiful way to meditate upon the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ through the eyes of His Blessed Mother.

Whether praying the traditional Mysteries or including the Luminous Mysteries, the heart of the Rosary remains unchanged: a prayerful journey through the mysteries of Christ’s life, inviting us to grow closer to Him through the loving intercession of Mary.
